CBSE CGPA to Percentage: 9.5 Multiplier Formula & Conversion Table

What is the CBSE CGPA System?

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) utilizes a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) system to assess students in secondary education. Instead of awarding raw percentage scores on report cards, CBSE provides grade points ranging from 1 to 10 for each subject.

Your Overall CGPA is the average of grade points obtained in the 5 main subjects (excluding the additional 6th subject).

Official CBSE CGPA to Percentage Formula

To convert your overall CBSE CGPA into an equivalent percentage, multiply your CGPA by 9.5:

Overall Percentage (%) = CGPA × 9.5

Why Does CBSE Use 9.5 as the Multiplier?

CBSE analyzed the previous 5 years of board examination results. The statistical average percentage of students scoring grade point 10 (91–100 marks) was 95%. Hence, dividing 95 by 10 yields 9.5 as the standard conversion factor.

Step-by-Step Calculation Example

Suppose a student scores the following grade points in Class 10:

SubjectGrade Point (GP)
English9.0
Mathematics8.0
Science9.0
Social Science8.0
Hindi / Regional9.0
Total Sum43.0
  1. Calculate Overall CGPA: 43.0 ÷ 5 = 8.60 CGPA
  2. Convert to Percentage: 8.60 × 9.5 = 81.70%

You can also use our free AnaCGPA CGPA Calculator or Percentage Calculator to compute your scores in seconds.

Subject-Wise Percentage Formula

If you need the percentage for an individual subject rather than the overall average:

Subject Percentage (%) = Subject Grade Point × 9.5

Example: A Grade Point of 9 in Mathematics equals 9 × 9.5 = 85.5%.
