What is Unweighted GPA?

An Unweighted GPA measures your average grade performance on a standard 4.0 scale without factoring in course difficulty. In an unweighted system, earning an 'A' in an introductory art class gives you the exact same 4.0 points as an 'A' in AP Calculus BC or Advanced Organic Chemistry.

  • Maximum Unweighted GPA: 4.0
  • Scale: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0

What is Weighted GPA?

A Weighted GPA rewards students who challenge themselves with more difficult coursework. Advanced classes are awarded bonus grade points:

  • Regular Courses: 4.0 Scale (No boost)
  • Honors Courses: +0.5 Boost (Max 4.5 Scale)
  • AP / IB / Dual Enrollment Courses: +1.0 Boost (Max 5.0 Scale)

How Admissions Officers Evaluate Both GPAs

College admissions committees review both numbers on your high school or college transcript:

  1. Unweighted GPA: Shows your raw consistency and mastery of class material.
  2. Weighted GPA: Demonstrates academic ambition and course rigor.
